Jay Ajayi's offseason has been quite the rollercoaster.
His stock slipped when the Miami Dolphins originally tried to sign C.J. Anderson and Chris Johnson during free agency, but he appeared to be in the clear when those pursuits failed. His stock trended downwards again when Miami flirted with Arian Foster in April, but once again, Ajayi looked to have dodged a bullet when Foster wasn't initially signed.
Ajayi was consistently getting drafted in the fifth round and was a decent value until Foster signed. While his value is cratering, consider what sits in front of Ajayi now.
Foster's combination of soft-tissue injuries and back issues are alarming, not to mention he is coming off an Achilles' injury. As our own JJ Zachariason pointed out when contemplating Foster's future, the aging back would really have to defy the odds to have a productive 2016 season.
On top of that, Foster wasn't very effective the last time he saw the field. His -0.24 Rushing NEP per rush in 2015 was 71st out of 72 backs with at least 50 carries. Sure, he was probably rusty having just come back from tearing his hamstring in the preseason, but that's not the Foster we knew from 2009-2014.
Ajayi's college production was outstanding, generating a 41.3% College Dominator rating, per PlayerProfiler.com, and 87th-percentile college target share in the passing game -- all to go with a very impressive 79th-percentile SPARQ score, highlighting his athleticism.
Ajayi's -0.01 Rushing NEP in 2015, while not world burning, was above league average and came behind the 28th-best run blocking offensive line, per Football Outsiders. That offensive line will have a chance to improve with the recent draft acquisition of Laremy Tunsil.
Foster and Ajayi have split first-team work in the preseason, but it's actually been Ajayi who has gotten the start in each of the first three games. Despite that, beat writers are speculating that Foster could see more touches this year. Either way, it appears as if Ajayi is going to see meaningful work even if Foster stays healthy -- which is a big if -- and at his current 10th-round cost, that makes Ajayi very attractive.
