Adrian Peterson went down with a knee injury on Sunday night and was unable to walk off under his own power, let alone return to the game. This puts his status in doubt not only for Week 3 but for the long-term as well. While he will be sharing some of the workload with Matt Asiata in Peterson's absence, Jerick McKinnon is the top dog to target in the Minnesota Vikings' backfield.
McKinnon has shown that he can be an incredibly efficient rusher (no surprise when you consider his athletic profile), and among the 72 backs to see at least 50 carries in 2015, he ranked third with a 0.17 Rushing NEP per carry.
The Vikings were the third-most run-heavy team in the league in 2015, and if Peterson misses extended time, McKinnon becomes a weekly starter in fantasy football with the kind of upside that could make him a top-12 running back.
