Wendell Smallwood was a recommended add last week but perhaps was a bit of a luxury given that his team was on their bye this week. Still, he did nothing in the off week to diminish his value, and the positive impressions he left after a 79-yard, 1-touchdown performance last week still remain.
After battling injuries for much of the offseason, Smallwood received 17 carries in Week 3 after Ryan Mathews' ankle injury flared up and looked impressive in the process. While the team has indicated that Mathews is the starter when healthy, staying healthy has never been one of his strengths. He's played 16 games just once in his seven seasons, and while we don't yet know the severity of this current injury, owning his backup is rarely a bad decision.
Smallwood should be owned as a handcuff to Mathews and, depending on how his injury progresses this week, could be even more valuable in a surprisingly effective Philadelphia Eagles offense.
