2017 NFL Mock Draft: Projecting What Could Happen in the First Round
What needs will each NFL team try to fill during Round 1 of the 2017 NFL Draft? We use analytics to try to figure it out.

8. Panthers: Ryan Ramczyk, Offensive Tackle

Top Needs: RB, IOL, OT, DE, CB

The Carolina Panthers offense cannot waste their franchise passer’s prime by continuing to allow him to take big hits (ninth-most Sack NEP allowed) not protecting their run game (12th-worst in Rushing Success Rate). By taking Wisconsin offensive tackle Ryan Ramcyzk, the Panthers get a safe option to help prolong Cam Newton's career.

Ramczyk is an athletic and aware pass protector and a powerful run blocker. His acceleration off the snap and power blend with an awareness and technical proficiency. He doesn’t get a ton of ground on his kick slide to the edge in pass protection, but he shuts down pass-rushers on the edge with strong arms and smooth movement.

Ramczyk allowed just 12 quarterback pressures this year, per PFF, and they graded him a strong 85.0 -- fourth-best among FBS tackles. Though he has to finish blocks better and doesn’t have sky-high potential, Ramczyk is an incredibly high-floor player and could be an above-average left tackle.
