In Week 3 of the 49ers 1999 regular season, quarterback Steve Young was knocked out with what turned out to be a career-ending concussion. From that point on, Jeff Garcia took over duties under center, and Rice's production suffered as a result.

Rice played all 16 games and racked up 830 yards, however, he posted the lowest catch rate (54%) ever recorded in his time with the Niners, meaning he tallied just 67 receptions on 124 opportunities. His five touchdowns were his worst as a 49er and when starting all 16 games.
