Offense ruled the day in 2016.

The Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots, football's best and fourth-best offenses, according to our Net Expected Points (NEP) metric, met in the Super Bowl, and the two other conference finalists also ranked inside the top 10 in schedule-adjusted NEP per play. In fact, of the 12 postseason combatants, only three teams (the Kansas City Chiefs, New York Giants and Houston Texans) finished in the bottom half of the league in Adjusted NEP per play and still reached the playoffs.

This falls in line with the results from 2015. That campaign ended with two top-shelf defenses meeting in the Super Bowl, but 9 of the 12 playoff teams featured quality offenses that ranked among the top 12 in Adjusted NEP per play (although the champion Denver Broncos were a glaring exception).

The NFL is an offensive league, and if you want to make a run at the Super Bowl, a top-notch offense clearly helps.

With that in mind, let's take a look at five teams whose offenses should perform better than they did last season.
