Fantasy Football: 4 Players You Can Drop After Week 5
Ben Roethlisberger, QB, Pittsburgh Steelers
Yahoo Ownership: 94%
Ben Roethlisberger has often had a flair for the dramatic throughout his storied career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The 2017 offseason theatrics involved discussion about contemplating retirement, which nobody really believed.
But after the Steelers' Week 5 30-9 blowout loss against the once-lowly Jacksonville Jaguars, it's fair to wonder how much Roethlisberger has left in the tank. Granted, the Jaguars' defense has been freak-nasty this season, ranking as the NFL's best pass defense, per our schedule-adjusted metrics.
But perhaps Roethlisberger is beginning to question himself, having responded to his five-interception game with a depressing sounding "maybe I don't have it anymore."
The one factor that Roethlisberger's fantasy football apologists could point to in recent years has been his performance in home games. Per Rotoviz's Game Splits app, from 2014 to 2016, he posted an incredible 30.35 points per game at home versus only 17.12 points per game on the road.
This season? Roethlisberger's just been bad, all the time, having posted no more than 17 FanDuel points in a single game this season, while averaging 12.55 points per game at home and 13.4 per points per game on the road.
While Big Ben does have upside if he can get his groove back thanks to a superb supporting cast, fantasy football is a weekly game where you can't afford to roll out players week after week who haven't been performing. Drop Roethlisberger and live the streaming life at the position instead.
