Head coach Bill O'Brien is a former Patriots assistant and coordinator, but he seems to come less from Bill Belichick's discipline than Chip Kelly's school of "get my former guys" thought. The Texans traded holdover Case Keenum to the St. Louis Rams and let Ryan Fitzpatrick join the New York Jets. With Patriots' backup Ryan Mallett and 2014 4th-rounder Tom Savage the only O'Brien originals on the roster, they had to do something to address this. Was it enough?
O'Brien has now traded for or signed two of his former quarterback projects to the Texans roster, adding Cleveland Browns' former starter Brian Hoyer. I expected O'Brien to select or sign a rookie to compete with Savage for a roster spot, or even to challenge for the backup job. For now, it seems, the Texans are content to float along with their 24th-ranked Adjusted Passing NEP from the season before; neither Mallett nor Hoyer will turn that around this season. Mallett is their best long-term bet of the players on the roster, but that isn't saying much.
Best Solution So Far: Ryan Mallett, incumbent
