I've said this all season, and I'll say it again. Yes, Joique Bell is a great talent at running back, there's no denying that. He's strong, patient, has great vision, and displays excellent footwork.
Ameer Abdullah is just the better tailback.
While Bell is a dependable, efficient back in his own right, when you see Abdullah on the field, it's just night and day. You watch his film from college and the guy makes moves and cuts that just shouldn't be humanly possible, making him the type of on-field talent that commands playing time.
I know it's still early in the preseason, but this past Thursday, in his rookie preseason debut, Abdullah continued to bolster my case for him on this 46-yard run.
Given Abdullah's superior agility scores -- which I found were actually slightly better than electric tailback Jahvid Best's numbers -- these types of plays should be be a regular occurrence for him. Indeed, if you watch tape on Abdullah he regularly showcases an amazing ability to change direction without losing any of his speed.
While praise has been heaped on the rookie back by Detroit's coaching staff, his teammates, and beat reporters this offseason, his biggest compliment has perhaps come from opposing Jets' head coach Todd Bowles when he compared him to a Detroit living legend: "He’s about as quick as Barry Sanders. I’m not saying he’s Barry, but he’s a good running back."
And I won't argue with him there. Just from the few plays we've seen Abdullah in this preseason, it already looks as if he's set to show the NFL (and anyone that doesn't draft them to their teams this season for that matter) why it's time to "Fear Ameer."
