Stevie Johnson' low average draft position was a curious case for numberFire's writers in the offseason. Yes, he did have a down year last year. But if you dig deeper into the data, he was actually pretty freaking good in his limited opportunities, indicating that it was a lack of volume contributing to his lackluster numbers. On a per-target basis, he actually ranked 17th out of 87 receivers targeted 50 or more times last season with a Reception NEP per target of 0.81. That's pretty darn good.
Now, with Johnson primarily taking over the coveted slot position formerly occupied by Eddie Royal, there's a good case to be made that he could ball out this year. And he began his redemption song yesterday, catching all of his 6 targets for 82 yards and a score.
Johnson eclipsed 1,000 yards through the air in each of his seasons between 2010 and 2012, and he's still younger than 30. And he's never had a quarterback as good as Philip Rivers delivering him strikes. Go get him if he's still available in your league.
