After playing just 10 snaps in a Week 1 loss to the Dolphins, Matt Jones showed everyone in Week 2 why I've been touting the running back out of Florida all offseason.
Carrying the ball 19 times to lead the team, Jones collected 123 yards (6.5 yard per carry) and 2 touchdowns on the ground while also reeling in all 3 of his targets for 23 yards through the air.
Jones' stellar production as measured by his numberFire Live, helped the Redkins take down the St. Louis Rams and might just motivate the coaching staff in Washington to get their rookie tailback more touches out of this backfield.
Incumbent starting tailback Alfred Morris has seen his efficiency as a rusher steadily decline, with his Rushing NEP per attempt dropping from 0.03 in his rookie year, to -0.02 in 2013 and -0.04 last season. For context, his per-carry Rushing NEP last year ranked him 25th among 43 backs with at least 100 carries.
This lack of effectiveness from Morris combined with Jones supreme combination of size and athleticism -- at 6'2" and 231 pounds he managed to run an impressive 6.83 3-cone drill time at the combine -- may mean that workload splits in this backfield like the one we saw this Sunday may become the norm in Washington sooner rather than later.
Even if Jones doesn't officially pass Morris on the depth charts, Washington's gameplan to rely heavily on their running game and beat teams with their defense will give Jones plenty of opportunity to put up numbers each week, making him a worthwhile add in all leagues this week.
