Danny Woodhead, RB, San Diego Chargers
7 Rushes, 36 Yards, 6 Receptions, 68 Yards, 6 Targets
NEP: +6.22
This week's NEP leader among running backs was surprisingly none other than Danny Woodhead. While he may not have been heavily utilized, our metrics found him to be the most efficient on a per-touch basis. Woodhead's 7 carries for 36 yards while catching 6 of 6 targets for 68 yards, helped keep San Diego's offense in closely contested game as they narrowly lost 19-24 to Cincinnati.
Despite teammate Melvin Gordon receiving the majority of carries, Woodhead was able to come on in relief and help keep the chains moving. Woodhead was able to convert two 3rd-and-1 situations into first downs for the Chargers rushing for 5- and 9-yard gains. 4 of his 13 touches went for first downs -- compared to Melvin Gordon's 4 for 17 -- as our metrics favored the spry Woodhead for his ability to extend drives and provide higher expected point totals for his team.
Through two weeks, Woodhead now ranks as the RB6 in full point per reception (PPR) scoring formats as he continues to be the superior option over the rookie Gordon (RB36). After missing most of the 2014 seasons, the Chargers are lucky to have their versatile running back return and pick off right where he left off. In 2013, he finished as the RB12 in PPR formats.
Week 2 had some surprises as far as other efficient running backs. New England's Dion Lewis just narrowly missed getting the top ranking honors with his +6.05 NEP on the heels of a 139-yard, 1-touchdown day. Washington rookie Matt Jones was the surprise of the week, as the coaching staff gave him a near 50/50 split on touches with veteran Alfred Morris. Jones failed to disappoint, as he racked up 123 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns along with 3 receptions for 23 yards.
