Todd Gurley was heralded as one of the best -- if not the best -- running back prospects to come into the NFL since Adrian Peterson. But given the ACL tear he suffered in his final year in college, there was significant doubt heading into the season as to whether he'd be able to make an impact in his rookie year.
I'm not sure too many of those doubters exist anymore after two straight weeks of Gurley carving up the fifth-ranked Cardinals' run defense in Week 5 to the tune of 146 yards and the Packers' much weaker run defense for 159 yards in Week 6. Moreover, Jeff Fisher seems to have completely taken off the reins of caution as well, going from feeding Gurley a modest 6 carries in Week 4 to 19 carries in Week 5 to an outrageous 30 carries in Week 6.
Looking at the analytics, Gurley's been impressive as well. He has posted a 2.36 Rushing NEP and an efficient 0.04 Rushing NEP per rush, so he's not just doing grown man’s work off of volume alone. And this week he gets what starting running backs dream about nightly: a matchup against the absolutely porous Cleveland Browns' run defense, the worst team against the run per our Defensive Rushing NEP metrics.
The Rams are 5.5-point favorites against the Browns at home, so they'll likely be nursing a late lead, meaning the Rams are going to keep feeding Gurley to kill some clock. Against the Browns, that should result in first down after first down, meaning more and more opportunities to rack up yardage and score his first NFL touchdown.
The matchup and recent usage all point to a monster game for Gurley. Get him in your cash and tournament lineups.
