Our own Dan Pizzuta did a study in the offseason about the Packers' use of tight ends and whether or not it should be a key position in the lineup for 2015. The answer was that it probably didn't need to be because of the talent at the quarterback position with Aaron Rodgers, and at wide receiver, with Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb, meant that targets were funneled to the most efficient receivers more frequently.
Needless to say, this article was written before Nelson's ACL tear. This season, Aaron Rodgers has been throwing to a clearly-not-the-same Randall Cobb, whose 0.58 Reception NEP per target is below league average, and a historically bad Davante Adams.
Now, Richard Rodgers hasn't exactly been a bastion of efficiency this season, compiling a 0.58 Reception NEP per target, which includes the numbers from Rodgers' 8-catch, 146-yard, 1-touchdown game on Thursday night against the Lions. But as the current third option in the passing game that contains one of, if not the best quarterback in the game, posting a stat line like that while reeling in a Hail Mary while the rest of your teams' receiving corps struggles could portend more opportunity.
And anyone receiving looks from Aaron Rodgers in the passing game is worth an add off of waivers to see if their opportunity level expands. As such, stake your claim for Richard Rodgers to see if his role expands in the wake of his awesome game on Thursday night.
