For all the negativity we threw Blaine Gabbert’s way after he was named the starting quarterback in San Francisco, he produced nearly identical Passing NEP metrics as his teammate, Colin Kaepernick (both ended with a -0.03 Passing NEP per play).
Ultimately, though, the 49ers were 3-5 with Gabbert as the starter, and he also finished as the fourth-worst 3rd-down passer this season.
On a per-play basis, Gabbert was the most inefficient third-down thrower in the league this year (-0.35), boasting a lowly 28.41 percent Success Rate.
With Chip Kelly as the new head coach in San Francisco, it’s tough to know which direction they will go with regards to the quarterback position, leaving Gabbert’s future as an NFL starter much in doubt.
