In fantasy football, one way to gain an edge over opponents is to look beyond the box score and examine player snap counts. While a quick scan of player stats can tell us who actually performed and produced, snap count data can give us an indicator of guys who are seeing the field on a consistent -- or inconsistent -- basis.
After all, opportunities breed fantasy points and snap counts are one of the more predictive metrics for fantasy football performance. This makes sense, intuitively, as the more a player is on the field, the more opportunities he'll have to touch the ball, and the more opportunities he'll have to score fantasy points.
In each of these weekly articles, I'll evaluate each position by looking at snap count, opportunity, and efficiency trends. All data, unless otherwise noted, comes from numberFire's Snap Count page.

- Unfortunately Week 4 was another week in which a couple of big-name running backs went down with injuries, one of whom was Nick Chubb. Chubb exited the game in the first half of the contest against the Dallas Cowboys after getting rolled up on by a Cowboys pass rusher. In his relief, Kareem Hunt led the backfield (26 snaps) to a victory while D'Ernest Johnson and Dontrell Hilliard played ancillary roles. Johnson (17 snaps) and Hilliard (15 snaps) played nearly the same amount, but Johnson was far more efficient, rushing for 95 yards on 13 carries.
- In Duke Johnson's return to action, it became clear that David Johnson wouldn't get the same level of usage while Duke is in the lineup. David Johnson's 55 percent snap share was by far his lowest of the season after having shares of 81 percent, 95 percent, and 94 percent. Meanwhile, Duke Johnson was in on 38 percent of the snaps. That said, David Johnson got an opportunity on over 50 percent of the snaps he played, which is extremely impressive. This will remain a shared backfield while both Johnsons are healthy, with David being the 1A option.
- Heading into Sunday, Chris Carson was questionable with a leg injury. Well that, nor a big hit during the game, prevented him from having a pretty decent outing. Behind him, however, it's a bit of a guessing game as to who has the backup role. Through the first couple weeks of the game, it appeared as though it was Carlos Hyde (26 percent snap share, 26 percent running back rush share), but he missed Sunday's game due to a shoulder injury. This left backup duties to Travis Homer and DeeJay Dallas. Homer (17 snaps), who had seen about a 20 percent snap share through the first three weeks, played more snaps than Dallas (11 snaps), but neither player was able to capitalize on the small opportunity each back got.

- Thursday night's matchup between the Denver Broncos and New York Jets wasn't pretty, but there's something we can learn from the game. In the first gull game without Drew Lock, Brett Rypien led the charge against the hapless Jets. Surprisingly, it was DaeSean Hamilton (57 snaps) who led Broncos receivers in snaps with Tim Patrick (53 snaps) and rookie sensation Jerry Jeudy (48 snaps) not far behind. However, it was Patrick (six receptions for 113 yards and a touchdown) and Jeudy (two receptions for 61 yards and a touchdown) who showed up in the box score most. I suspect we'll see more from the receiving group as a whole with Noah Fant expected to miss a couple weeks.
- The Miami Dolphins played a surprisingly plucky game against the Seahawks this week, nearly pulling off the upset. We didn't just see a fun game, though -- we saw a clear separation in the receiving corps pecking order. DeVante Parker led Dolphins wide receivers in snaps for the third straight week and collected a season-high 10 receptions on 12 targets. Isaiah Ford (63 percent snap share) and Preston Williams (61 percent snap share) appear to round out the Dolphins' three-receiver sets, while Jakeem Grant (39 percent snap share) is used sparingly. Right now Ford and Williams cannot be trusted in starting lineups and are at-best DFS dart throws.
- After missing Week 3 due to a chest injury, D.J. Chark returned to form as the Jacksonville Jaguars' top receiving threat. Jacksonville did not limit Chark's workload whatsoever, giving him an 85 percent snap share. He turned that into eight receptions on nine targets for 95 yards and two receiving touchdowns, good enough for a top-five wide receiver fantasy finish. Behind Chark, Keelan Cole remained the Jaguars' number two option at wide receiver, playing on 74 percent of snaps on Sunday. Finally, Laviska Shenault enthusiasts should be encouraged by his season-high 86 receiving yards, even though it came on a season-low 54 percent snap share. Jacksonville projects to be in a negative game script for the majority of their games, so they'll be throwing the ball quite a bit.

- Without Jared Cook in the lineup, many focused their attention to rookie tight end Adam Trautman to make some noise. However, Trautman's stat line was as noisy as the Superdome on a Tuesday night in March. Playing on just 19 of the New Orleans Saints' 70 snaps and seeing only one target is far from what those who plugged him into their DFS lineups hoping for some cheap production wanted to see. It wasn't just Trautman, though, as Josh Hill played on 57 percent of snaps but also only saw one target all game. This could likely be a product of the Saints gouging the Detroit Lionson the ground (164 yards rushing), but it will be difficult to project any reasonable production from Saints tight ends not named Jared Cook.
- The tight end room for the Los Angeles Rams continues to be led by Tyler Higbee while Gerald Everett plays one of the more significant TE2 roles in the league. Through four weeks, Higbee is the clear leader with 15 targets, 155 receiving yards, and an 83 percent snap share, compared to just 5 targets for 51 yards on just a 43 percent snap share for Everett. However, Everett played a season-high 58 percent snap share on Sunday and has run a route on 37 percent of his snaps (compared to 31 percent for Higbee), per PFF. Higbee will remain the TE1 in this offense, but Everett clearly lowers his weekly floor, as displayed this past week.
