Minnesota Vikings tight end Irv Smith Jr. suffered a high-ankle sprain in Sunday's Week 8 win over the Arizona Cardinals.
Smith is still undergoing additional testing, but he's expected to be out multiple weeks. Johnny Mundt will likely take over as the Vikings' starting tight end while Smith is sidelined. He hauled in his only target for a one-yard touchdown on Sunday versus the Cardinals. Mundt's first first start is set to come in Week 9 against the Washington Commanders.
Prior to leaving early, Smith caught 4 passes on 4 targets for 28 yards. He played 50-65% of the offensive snaps in Weeks 2-6 and averaged 5.4 targets per game in that stretch (14.5% target share). Mundt has 12 catches on 14 targets for 76 yards and a touchdown this season.
