San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy (elbow) is on track to be the starting quarterback, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed.
"He would have to melt in practice to lose it," Shanahan said of Purdy and the starting job. "And Brock's too good of a player to melt in practice." Shanahan added that Purdy will no longer require scheduled off-days during weekly practices as he recovers from an elbow injury and ramps up his workload ahead of Week 1. Trey Lance and Sam Darnold will continue to compete for backup duties behind Purdy.
Purdy averaged 18.1 FanDuel points in Weeks 13-18 last season, which would have made him the QB13 for the entire season. Looking ahead, Mr. Irrelevant from 2022 is the QB25 in numberFire's preseason rankings. Our models project him for 3,742.8 passing yards with 25.77 touchdowns and 13.3 interceptions this season, and 40.1 rush attempts for 176.4 yards and 1.26 touchdowns.
