Patriots remain evasive on Week 12 quarterback

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick declined to name a starting quarterback for Week 12 against the New York Giants while speaking to the media on Tuesday.

What It Means:

“I’ve told everybody to be ready to go," Belichick replied when asked who the Patriots' starting quarterback would be on Sunday. "I’ve told every player to be ready to play.” Mac Jones has started all 10 games this season, but Bailey Zappe and Will Grier could take over coming out of the bye week. Zappe has thrown 25 passes in three relief appearances and Grier hasn't appeared in a game since 2019. They are both unlikely to be an upgrade for Demario Douglas or any of the other pass-catchers on the Patriots.

Among the 24 quarterbacks with at least 300 dropbacks this season, Jones is averaging the third-fewest Passing Net Expected Points per attempt (negative-0.12), ahead of only Zach Wilson (negative-0.18) and Bryce Young (negative-0.21). Zappe is averaging negative-0.50 Passing NEP on 26 dropbacks.
