Philadelphia Eagles running back Ryan Mathews may lose his starting job to Darren Sproles, according to head coach Doug Pederson, who said he will "evaluate" the situation this week.
"I can't say that 100 percent," Pederson said. "It's something we'll evaluate in these next couple of days and make that determination." Mathews played a mere eight snaps in Week 8, and Sproles has now out-snapped him by 113 offensive plays this season. From the outside, it appears the switch has already been made.
Among all running backs with at least 40 carries this season, Sproles' 0.09 Rushing Net Expected Points (NEP) per play ranks fourth overall. Mathews is well behind at -0.02 Rushing NEP.
