The New England Patriots and Rob Gronkowski's family have released a statement saying he is unlikely to play again this season, but that a final determination will not be made until after he undergoes back surgery on Friday.
Gronkowski suffered the back injury in Sunday's win over the New York Jets. Just another of the numerous ailments the 27-year-old tight end has suffered in his career. He has only played eight games this season and 56 since the end of the 2011 season. Martellus Bennett will gain the most in Gronkowski's absence. The loss of Gronkowski also takes away one of Tom Brady's best weapons, hurting the quarterback's value for the remainder of the season.
2016 has been Gronkowski's worst season in the NFL as he finishes with career-lows of 25 catches, 540 yards, and 3 touchdowns.
