If you follow the NHL, you already know all of the top players. Obviously, when playing DFS, those players will come at a high cost. In this article, we are looking to find the cheaper value plays to help you afford the superstars.
Charlie Coyle, Center, Boston Bruins
FanDuel Price: $4,600
With Patrice Bergeron on the shelf, David Krejci has jumped up to the top line, which has allowed Charlie Coyle to slot in into the second line. He's a solid price at $4,600 as the Boston Bruins and will be playing with Jake DeBrusk and rookie Jack Studnicka, who will be making his NHL debut.
Coyle also plays on the second power-play unit, which is typically not a huge advantage because the top unit stays on for so often, but when Bergeron is out, they play their power-play units a bit more equally.
Denis Gurianov, Winger, Dallas Stars
FanDuel Price: $3,700
This is a name you would have never seen here before, and perhaps playing on the tail end of a back-to-back isn't the best time to be throwing it out there, but here we are.
Denis Gurianov has been pretty solid for the Dallas Stars this season. While his four goals and eight points in 20 games don't seem that great, he's fired off 49 shots in 20 games for an average of just under 2.5 per game. That's pretty incredible for a player who plays just 12:32 per game so far this season.
Now, that ice-time has ticked up a bit as of late, as he's played 13:23 or more in seven of his last nine games. In addition, he plays on the Stars' second power-play unit, which has struggled this season but at least puts him in position for offense.
Sami Vatanen, Defence, New Jersey Devils
FanDuel Price: $4,900
The start of Sami Vatanen's career seemed promising from an offensive standpoint, but things have plateaued and then regressed back to where we are. Right now, he's got four goals and nine points in 18 games this season, which would put him on pace for one of his best offensive seasons. In addition, he contributes 1.78 shots per game and 1.39 blocks per game, which is decent.
The New Jersey Devils power play is in the bottom third of the NHL, but the Minnesota Wild penalty kill is in the middle of the pack, so there isn't much of an advantage here. However, the fact that Vatanen is on the top power-play unit gives him a bit more offensive upside.
