When playing NHL DFS -- much like MLB DFS -- stacking is key. Having multiple players from the same team, who correlate together, can give your lineup upside and help you maximize potential points.
You can roster up to four players from the same team in NHL, and you should look to have players from the same forward line or power-play unit together. Shared ice time is the key, as it will maximize their ability to contribute to real-life goals with each other, ultimately leading to more fantasy points for us.
Generally, we don't see late scratches in the NHL, and the team's lines are confirmed at practice or before the game. Two of the best resources for that are LeftWingLock.com or DailyFaceOff.com. That is where you can find updated forward and power-play lines for each team.
Colorado Avalanche
We have 11 games on tonight's slate, and the Colorado Avalanche are head and shoulders above every other team.
Right now, the Avalanche have an implied goal total sitting at 3.96 -- the highest on the slate -- while the second team is sitting at 3.42. Over a 0.50 difference is A LOT in the NHL, and you should be looking towards the Avalanche in all formats tonight.
They are home to take on the Ottawa Senators, a team we've stacked against all season, so no chance we are stopping now. Why have we been attacking the Senators all season? Well, they are terrible on defense and present opponents with a floor of points, along with a high ceiling to reach for. They are sitting in the bottom 10 of the league for Corsi Against (shot attempts allowed), Expected Goals Allowed, and the number of High-Danger-Scoring-Chances allowed per 60 minutes.
These two teams played this past Thursday in Ottawa, where the Avalanche won 4-1. We should be seeing that plus more tonight since this game is in Colorado, giving them the last line change. It should also be noted that they have a few injuries right now, which could change their top two forward lines, but it brings some value.
Nathan MacKinnon ($8,800), Mikko Rantanen ($7,700), Gabriel Landeskog ($6,400), and Cale Makar ($5,900) are on the first power-play unit and are one of the best stacks tonight. They are certainly very expensive, so look to add Joonas Donskoi ($3,800) for some savings, as he should be changing lines due to the injuries.
Winnipeg Jets
Another home favorite to target tonight is the Winnipeg Jets with their 3.36 implied goal total against the New York Rangers.
The Jets have been tough to figure out this season, and it's shown clearly in their recent stretch of games. They were on a five-game losing streak just prior to the All-Star break and have since won four of their last five games, scoring four goals or more in each win.
They are all over the place, but if they are hot right now, you want to stack their first forward line. Kyle Connor ($6,400), Mark Scheifele ($7,000), and Patrik Laine ($8,000) come in with 21 points and 49 shots in their last five games. To a degree, the Jets are summed up like this: whichever way the first forward line in trending is the way the team will trend overall. They don't get a whole lot of production from their depth players, so it may sound silly to say, but when their best players are playing well, they win games.
They should be in a spot to continue that tonight since they are facing the Rangers, a team that's sitting in the bottom three of the league for Corsi Against, Expected Goals Allowed, and the number of High-Danger-Scoring-Chances allowed per 60 minutes. Look to the Jets' skaters in both cash games and tournaments tonight.
Edmonton Oilers
The Edmonton Oilers are a bit of a question mark tonight, and it might not be a bad thing.
The reason they are a question mark tonight is the health surrounding Connor McDavid ($8,700). He is dealing with a knee injury, and his status for tonight has yet to be decided. McDavid is not only the best player on the Oilers, but the best player in the entire league. Losing his level of production is a massive drop-off, and that could scare people away from stacking the Oilers tonight.
For this reason, I like the Oilers as a stack tonight, aiming to find them at lower ownership. There are 11 games on the slate, so we shouldn't expect too much ownership on the Oilers when they could be down their star player.
Their matchup is still elite since they are taking on the Chicago Blackhawks, a bottom-tier defense in the normal areas we look to attack. If McDavid is out of the lineup, look to stack Leon Draisaitl ($8,300) -- who should be moved up the first forward line -- then Ryan Nugent-Hopkins ($6,200), Alex Chiasson ($3,800), and Darnell Nurse ($4,200).
Florida Panthers
The Florida Panthers are another team who been tough to figure out this season, so let's jump in.
Prior to the All-Star break, the Panthers were en fuego, winning six straight and scoring four goals or more in every game. However, since the break, they have lost five of six games and have scored two goals or fewer in each of the five losses.
Tonight, they can get back on the right track since they are up against the New Jersey Devils, who are allowing 3.6 goals per game this season. The Devils also have all four of their forward lines rated 23rd or worse and all three of their defensive pairings rated 26th or worse this season. They are not a good team.
The Panthers do have a good offense, scoring the fifth-most goals in the league, so this is just a downturn as of late. They simply need to get it done in this matchup, and that means trusting their top forward line, which is also their top power-play unit. Jonathan Huberdeau ($7,300), Aleksander Barkov ($7,200), and Evgeni Dadonov ($6,100) are those players to trust and certainly on the higher-end of prices.
