Spending lower in any daily fantasy lineup is a way to incorporate some diversity into your roster. In NHL DFS, there is typically more value in this strategy but also a good deal more risk. This is especially true on tonight's slate, where there are lots of lower-salaried plays. Plugging in these options will afford you more chances to play some studs, as well.
Thursday night expects to feature ten games on the main slate. Let's take a look at what values we can find.
Pius Suter, Center, Chicago Blackhawks
FanDuel Salary: $3,700
The speed Pius Suter possesses is something that should have DFS owners salivating. Suter has hit the scoresheet in four of his previous five outings. The overtime goal against the Dallas Stars was hopefully a harbinger of things to come. Suter has the talent to play with anyone. It is a question of putting it all together on a more consistent basis.
He had four shots on goal and three scoring chances on Tuesday. If Suter can keep doing that, he will continue to be a viable option. The Columbus Blue Jackets are a team vulnerable to speed and vicious accelerations. This is an aspect of Suter's game he can use to his advantage on Thursday night.
If you want to look into other value plays from the pivot, Colton Sissons ($3,300) is an extremely dicey option for Nashville but is at least getting top-line minutes.
Andrew Copp, Wing, Winnipeg Jets
FanDuel Salary: $4,000
Andrew Copp is still a valuable wing on FanDuel, and though his shot and blocked shot floor is rather low, he has 12 real-world points on the season after two more assists against Calgary on Tuesday night.
That being said, one almost has to roster him against an Ottawa team that allows more than four goals a game on the road. With Copp playing top-line minutes, the scoring chances are there, so he can accidentally stumble into points and reaching value.
If for some reason Copp's inability to get shots on net makes one queasy, then pivoting down to Brock McGinn ($3,300) is a possibility. He is on a three-game run of goals and is now playing in the top-six for the Carolina Hurricanes.
Filip Hronek, Defenseman, Detroit Red Wings
FanDuel Salary: $3,800
Value options are improved on Thursday night, and Filip Hronek does have six real-world points (all assists). It is not a shortage of chances but mostly due to the scoring of Detroit drying up (1.93 goals per game -- 31st in the NHL). The Detroit Red Wings' defenseman has to wonder where all the offense went. Bobby Ryan has stopped scoring, and Tyler Bertuzzi has been out with an injury -- that explains part of the problem.
Hronek has also hit several posts in the early going. His ability to create chances on the power play could pay dividends tonight against a Nashville Predators team that is struggling mightily in all phases -- especially the penalty kill (62.7% -- 31st in the NHL). There is definite value in Detroit and in Nashville. These are the 29th- and 30th-ranked teams in terms of shooting percentage. Something has to give.
Alec Martinez ($4,100) is available for the Vegas Golden Knights provided that the Vegas game is not postponed.
Kevin Lankinen, Goalie, Chicago Blackhawks
FanDuel Salary: $7,200
This is not an easy play, but the salary soothes it some. Kevin Lankinen is on a roll with three wins in his last four starts while he continues to face nearly 35 shots per start for the Chicago Blackhawks. With a better chance of garnering a win tonight along with his ability to keep Chicago in games -- one regulation loss in nine appearances -- Lankinen's outlook is better than usual.
The ability to stop high-danger chances is not too much of a concern as Lankinen is used to facing 10 to 15 of those a night. With the way Chicago plays, Lankinen's ability to move well laterally is paramount. Also, the Columbus Blue Jackets' offense has been rejuvenated of late (since the Pierre-Luc Dubois trade), which translates to another night of higher shot totals.
Mikko Koskinen ($7,400) of the Edmonton Oilers is worth a look. Also, check who winds up starting for the Calgary Flames and make sure it is Jacob Markstrom.
