NHL DFS is similar to MLB in terms of how you build lineups, how you view stacking, and how to value players.
Two main points to always focus on in NHL DFS are what lines the players are on and making sure the goalies you are rostering are confirmed as the starters. Two of the best resources for that are LeftWingLock.com and DailyFaceOff.com. That is where you can find updated forward and power-play lines for each team, along with which goalies are confirmed as the starters.
Let's jump in and take a look at today's slate and some players to consider for your lineups.
Goalie to Target
Craig Anderson ($7,600): With a loaded 11-game slate, there are plenty of options to pick from, but Anderson from the Buffalo Sabres stands out tonight. Surprisingly, the Sabres (-255) are the largest favorite on tonight's slate and are set to take on the Arizona Coyotes. This should put Anderson in a spot to continue his hot start to the season and pick up another win.
The Coyotes come in scoring only 1.91 goals per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, which is the fourth-lowest in the league, making this one of the softest matchups on the slate. Anderson has posted a stellar 1.28 goals against average and a .927 save percentage in his seven starts this season -- a level he can replicate tonight against the Coyotes.
High-Salaried Skaters
Steven Stamkos ($9,600): Stamkos got off to a blazing hot start this season, scoring seven goals in the first five games of the season. He has played seven additional games since then and is still stuck at seven goals. A bit of an up-and-down start and a lack of consistency, which is something every player has to deal with. It's good to see that he is still averaging 4.1 shots on goal per game; that's an encouraging sign.
Stamkos isn't fazed by the lack of production; he keeps firing the puck and producing fantasy points since he continues to pick up assists in the potent Tampa Bay Lightning offense. If he's not scoring but is still a viable fantasy option, when he is able to find the back of the net, he will push toward his fantasy ceiling.
With tonight's matchup against the Edmonton Oilers having a 6.5 over/under, this could be the time Stamkos breaks his scoring drought, finds a goal, and becomes one of the best plays on the slate.
Jack Hughes ($7,200): The New Jersey Devils have a ton of offensive upside every single night. Right now, the Devils come in with a 72.18 Corsi For (Total Shot Attempts Created), scoring 3.37 goals per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations. Both are the highest in the league. They have it factor this season and are a young, fast, highly-skilled team with fantasy options all over their lineup.
Hughes is on the second forward line and the first power-play unit, putting him as one of the truly elite options every night due to this powerful offense scoring every night. He comes in with 12 NHL points and averages 4.4 shots on goal per game, so he's the perfect type of player for cash games or tournaments.
The Devils are taking on the Calgary Flames, who are struggling on defense to start the season, allowing the 10th-most (2.72) goals per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations. We should see plenty of offense in this game, and Hughes will be right in the middle of it for the Devils.
Value Skaters
Tim Stutzle ($5,900): The Ottawa Senators are the epitome of a fun fantasy team. They find themselves in the top 10 of the league in Corsi For (Total Shot Attempts Created) and goals scored while also being in the bottom 10 of the league in goals allowed. This puts them in very high-scoring back-and-forth games, which presents a tremendous among of fantasy points for all.
While there are some high-salaried options in this matchup between the Senators and the Vancouver Canucks, we can find some value with Stutzle. He is on the first forward line and the first power-play unit, which has led him to produce 9 NHL points and 21 shots on goal in 11 games. I'd like to see the shot volume a bit higher, but the strong offensive role puts him in a spot to rack up fantasy points every night.
Viktor Arvidsson ($5,000): The Los Angeles Kings and Minnesota Wild are another set of teams that like to engage in high-scoring matchups with plenty of fantasy production. A 6.5 over/under is a good sign we are going to see some goals tonight, and when both teams are in the bottom six of the league for the most goals allowed per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, it shouldn't be a surprise.
Arvidsson started the season a bit slow but now has five NHL points over his last five games -- along with 14 shots on goal. A strong role on the second forward line and the second power-play unit makes him an ideal value option tonight.
