In daily fantasy hockey, stacking is a key strategy in tournaments. We want to correlate our lineups with up to four players to maximize our upside -- if one player on a line is scoring goals, it's likely that his linemates are getting assists, as well.
Ideally, we want players who will get a lot of ice time together on an even-strength line and a power-play line. Two good resources for line combinations are LeftWingLock.com and DailyFaceoff.com, so be sure to check those sites for updated line information.
We are almost at the Christmas break for the NHL, but we've got seven games on tonight's main slate to keep us occupied for the time being.
Boston Bruins
The Boston Bruins continue to be the best team in the NHL this season. They put seven past the Florida Panthers on Monday. Their .839 points percentage is by far the best in the NHL, and they can ride that into tonight's game.
The Bruins' first line is fully correlated with the top power play unit. It has Patrice Bergeron ($7,300) and Brad Marchand ($7,700) as usual. They are playing with Jake DeBrusk ($6,900), who is having a breakout season and the best of his career to this point. This line is actually pretty affordable for what they offer as the top line on the best team in the NHL.
The second line has Boston's top scorer. David Pastrnak ($10,100) has proven he can score away from Marchand and Bergeron, but he will still join them on the first power play. He plays with David Krejci ($6,100) and Pavel Zacha ($4,600) at even strength, and these two link up on the second power play unit.
Boston will face the Winnipeg Jets at home tonight. Winnipeg has been decent at preventing goals this season, but they still are about league average in shot and chance suppression. They have to rely on goaltending, which will be tough against the team averaging the second-most goals per game this season.
The Bruins have an implied team total of 3.56 goals tonight, the second-highest on tonight's slate. Even though the matchup isn't perfect, this is still one of the better spots you will find tonight.
Ottawa Senators
The Ottawa Senators find themselves disappointingly at the bottom of the Atlantic Division after some people thought they could be playoff contenders. They've had injury issues but still have enough firepower to warrant stacking tonight.
The Sens' top line has definitely not been the problem with the team. Brady Tkachuk ($9,300) is on pace for a career-high in points and is also seventh in the NHL in shots on goal with 140. Tim Stutzle ($7,700) is also averaging a career-high in points per game and is likely to return to the lineup tonight. Claude Giroux ($7,200) is still getting it done at age 34 with 29 points in 32 games. Tkachuk and Stutzle will play together on the first power play, and Ottawa's power play ranks fourth in the league.
Ottawa is at home tonight against the Washington Capitals. Washington ranks as a fairly average defensive team in most metrics and aren't really a matchup to shy away from. Ottawa may not be a great team, but their offensive players are good enough to score some goals tonight.
The Senators' implied team total is 3.14 goals, and the top line may make for a sneaky stack because they are underdogs in this matchup.
Calgary Flames
The Calgary Flames have won two games in a row and are using different line combinations that have seen them score 12 goals in the past two games. They'll look to keep that up in a matchup that might be better than people realize.
The Flames have kept Tyler Toffoli ($6,600) and Elias Lindholm ($7,000) together for most of the season, even if most of the other players have been moved around. Lindholm leads the team in points, and Toffoli is tied for the team lead in goals. They are joined by Dillon Dube ($5,300) now, who has seven points in his last four games.
The second line now has Nazem Kadri ($7,200) playing with Jonathan Huberdeau ($5,700). Kadri scored two goals and Huberdeau had three assists in the last game, and these two play together on the first power play. Milan Lucic ($4,000) is also on this line and can be used for some salary relief in this stack.
Calgary is on the road against the Los Angeles Kings tonight. The Kings are no longer an elite defensive team, as they've allowed the eighth-most goals per game, thanks to the league's worst goaltending. Calgary scored six goals the last time these teams played, one of their best offensive performances of the season.
The Flames are favored tonight, and even though this game has a total of six, these teams combined for 11 goals last month. The Kings have been playing many high-scoring games this season, and if it's going to be another one tonight, we should view the Flames as one of the best teams to stack tonight.
