Best Picks: Jacob Realmuto, Sean Manaea, Vincent Velasquez
Miami Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto provides a ton of value as the ninth catcher off the board at pick 171. Not only does he provide great coverage in batting average, hitting .303 last season, but he is also a sneaky source of speed -- Realmuto swiped 12 bags last year, and over the last two seasons has nabbed a total of 20 pilfers. The next closest catcher has only eight over the same time frame. Combine that with his 11 bombs last year, and Realmuto shows off a nice power-speed combo rarely seen at the catcher position.
While the Oakland Athletics languished to a 69-93 last place finish in the American League West last year, it had nothing to do with rookie lefty Sean Manaea's performance. Manaea was only the 55th starting pitcher off the board in this mock, but he was brilliant in the second half of last year to the tune of a 2.67 ERA and 22.8% strikeout rate over 77 2/3 innings pitched. Manaea's swinging-strike rate of 11.9% placed him 15th among major league starters with at least 120 innings pitched.
When Vincent Velasquez was healthy last year, he was lights out. Over his first 11 starts, he struck out 28.5% of the batters he faced with an acceptable 8.6% walk rate. You do still worry about health, but at this late in the draft, that's a worthwhile risk. Velasquez was the 65th overall starting pitcher.
