In 35 starts and 17 wins, a 30-year-old Curt Schilling scored a WAR of 8.2 with a FIP of 2.62. In 254.1 innings pitched, he struck out 11.29 batter per nine innings.

That year, Schilling went to the All-Star Game, but placed fourth in the Cy Young voting behind Pedro Martinez, Greg Maddux and Denny Neagle.
