Following a stretch of four multi-hit performances in five games, Whit Merrifield experienced a price hike last week, making him less appealing despite a promising matchup against Hector Velazquez.

Rostering leadoff hitters is always a solid strategy for those extra plate appearances, and Merrifield certainly has some things going for him with a 12.6% strikeout rate and 34.5% hard-hit rate. The Kansas City Royals have a 4.75 implied team total, so we should expect them to put up some runs.

That being said, you're not getting a great bang for your buck with Merrifield's modest .334 wOBA and .168 ISO. And although the Royals are scoring more lately, they've been a poor offense for most of the season. This isn't the leadoff hitter you're looking for.
