Pedro Alvarez didn't spend much time at the major league level in 2017, so we have to look all the way back to the 2016 to get a significant sample to draw from.

He hit right-handed pitching well over 336 plate appearances in that time, turning a 40.6% hard-hit rate into a .358 wOBA and .262 ISO. For only $300 above minimum-salary, those are some eye-opening numbers.

Tonight's matchup against Toronto righty Marco Estrada also gives his value a boost. Estrada hasn't allowed much production to start the season, but his 4.32 SIERA suggests that he hasn't pitched nearly as well as his 2.77 ERA would lead you to believe. Two starts shouldn't lead us to make any large assumptions, especially after posting a career-worst 4.69 SIERA in 33 starts a year ago.
