Xander Bogaerts has had a strong start to the season, batting over .300 with an Isolated Slugging Percentage (ISO) above .200. However, his walk rate has dipped and his strikeout rate has increased from where they were a year ago. His results have been strong thanks to an unsustainable .363 batting average on balls in play (BABIP).
Bogaerts has also exhibited some stark platoon splits in his career. He has just a 95 wRC+ against right-handed pitching, including a 32.6% fly-ball rate and 30.9% hard-hit rate. And, in Trevor Cahill, Bogaerts will be facing a pitcher who has been extremely tough against right-handed hitting in his career. Cahill has held righty hitters ito a .312 wOBA, including a measly 23.7% fly-ball rate and 27.9% hard-hit rate in his career.
Cahill has also been excellent in general this season. He has a 33.7% strikeout rate, 6.5% walk rate, and just a 26.9% fly-ball rate allowed. This is good for a 2.55 SIERA, including a ridiculous 16.0% swinging-strike rate. Use Bogaerts against Cahill at your own risk.
