Remember when James Shields was an All-Star in 2011? Man, that seems like a long time ago, and it was. In 2016 and 2017, Shields recorded skill-interactive ERAs (SIERA) of 5.12 and 4.94, respectively. Things haven't been much better so far in 2018 as he has pitched to a 5.60 SIERA over 48 innings pitched.
Shields, interestingly, has been very strong against left-handed hitters so far this season. Over 23 innings pitched and 100 total batters faced, Shields has recorded solid marks of a .291 weighted on-base average (wOBA) and 26.1% hard-hit rate.
Enter the switch-hitting Jurickson Profar, who's been Mike Trout-esque as a righty but pretty weak as a lefty in 2018. Spanning 108 plate appearances, Profar has posted a .245 wOBA, .101 isolated power (ISO), and 24.1% hard-hit rate from the left side.
Profar deserves our attention as a right-handed hitter, but he is tough to roster today on a night when people may flock to the Texas Rangers.
