A quick peep at young hurler Luke Weaver's numbers against right-handed batters would make you think Maikel Franco is a tasty choice tonight -- dating back to the start of 2017, Weaver has pitched 54 2/3 innings in this split and posted an ugly 5.60 ERA.
A deep dive, though, reveals that Weaver has been blasted by one particular opponent, the Chicago Cubs, and that is heavily skewing those digits. In 7 of those 54 2/3 innings against right-handed Cubbies, Weaver has been tattooed for a 15.43 ERA, .399 wOBA, and an absurd 46.4% hard-hit rate.
Removing those pesky north-siders, Weaver has dominated right-handed bats. Against all other right-handed opponents (47 2/3 innings and 200 total batters faced), Weaver has posted a .292 wOBA, 29.5% strikeout rate, and 24.8% hard-hit rate.
Franco, meanwhile, hasn't been at the top of his game versus righties. Going back to the start of 2017, in 560 plate appearances, the slugger has recorded a .307 wOBA and 29.1% hard-hit rate.
All this adds up to pivoting elsewhere at the hot corner this evening.
