Jeremy Hellickson has quietly looked rather impressive in limited innings for the Washington Nationals. Pounding the strike zone for a career-best 71.1% first-pitch strikes and then fooling hitters with a souped-up breaking ball that's coaxing a 40.4% reach rate, Hellickson has earned a 2.81 FIP that, when compared to his 5.77 FIP across 166 innings last season, looks like the work of an entirely different pitcher.
Of course, there's still plenty of time for Hellickson's suspiciously low 7.7% homer-per-fly rate to come back to earth, but it's unlikely that regression will bite too hard in Week 8 against a flailing Padres offense that ranks near the very bottom of the Major League leaderboard in team isolated slugging (ISO) against righties.
