Rhys Hoskins has been a true mystery so far this season for Philadelphia.
When he was called up on August 10th last year, he set an MLB record by cranking 18 homers in his first 34 games, putting up a .314/.442/.805 slash line in 147 plate appearances. However, over the last two weeks of the season, he batted .135/.292/.192 in his final 65 plate appearances with no home runs.
At the start of this year, the streakiness continued. He got off to a blazing start, hitting .346/.495/.603 in his first 103 plate appearances, with 4 homers and 19 RBIs, but that has been followed by a slump in which he's batted .143/.256/.286 with 2 homers and 8 RBIs in 82 plate appearances.
He homered against Jack Flaherty on Sunday, his first bomb since May 5th, so maybe it's a sign things are turning around for a slugger who has shown great plate discipline and a relatively acceptable strikeout rate throughout his career. Hold onto Hoskins for now to see if he can pull out of this spiral, because when he does, he's shown he possesses the ability to go on a lights-out tear.
