Mike Foltynewicz appears to be a high-ceiling option with his 2.87 ERA facing a Philadelphia Phillies lineup that is average (97 wRC+) against right-handed pitching. A more in-depth look shows this is not the case, however.
Foltynewicz has never had superb command, but it is increasingly becoming an issue as his walk rate sits at 11.8% in the young 2018 season. He's also had issues with contact management as he has surrendered a 36.4% hard-hit rate. Plus, his 8.9% swinging-strike rate indicates his 27.9% strikeout rate is due for a massive correction.
The Phillies may not be as easy of a matchup as they appear, either. They are second in baseball in walk rate against right-handed pitching, which happens to be Foltynewicz's biggest weakness. Coupled with the start coming on the road as Foltynewicz moves from a top-10 pitcher's park in SunTrust Park to a top-10 hitter's park in Citizens Bank Park, too many factors are working against Foltynewicz for him to be usable in DFS, particularly in cash games.
