There's little question that Gerrit Cole is by far the top arm on tonight's five-game slate, so he'll almost certainly see massive ownership across all contests. But even the best hurlers can have the occasional off night, so in spite of a pretty sparse group of alternatives, it's still worth being open to trying something different in tournaments.
The truth is that we don't have any idea how Jalen Beeks will do in his MLB debut against the Detroit Tigers, but he's dirt cheap and should pique our interest after putting up a 2.98 FIP, 35.4% strikeout rate, and 6.2% walk rate over 10 Triple-A starts this season. The Tigers have posted a 111 wRC+ against lefties, so this might not be the ideal matchup, but when there's a relative unknown on the mound, the opposing team may have limited knowledge on how to attack him.
Really, we could see this one going either way, but particularly on short slates, we have to be willing to take some leaps of faith. Beeks will give you a boatload of extra cash for your hitters, and you'll have a vastly different lineup construction from the chalk.
