Colorado Rockies starter Jon Gray is such a tease.
It's clear the guy has great stuff. You don't strike out 28.6% of hitters and whiff 11.45 guys per 9 innings because you stink. And yet, MLB batters continue to square him up. In 16 starts this season (88 innings), he has a 5.52 ERA that is 4th-highest among qualified MLB starters. Opponents are hitting .279 against him even though he's improved his strikeout-to-walk percentage this year.
His 3.03 FIP and 2.83 xFIP indicates better days are ahead, but Gray has been hit around hard this year, and his 4.61 ERA and 3.60 FIP 2 years ago indicate this is something Gray does. And lest you think this is a Coors Field phenomena, his home ERA is 5.64 and his road ERA is 5.40.
Try and use his FIP, xFIP and strikeout numbers to sell him to another owner.
