Seattle Mariners starter Marco Gonzales had a rough 2017 season, working his way back from Tommy John surgery and posting a 4.48 SIERA over 40 innings, including 1.80 home runs per nine innings pitched (HR/9). But so far this season, he has shown major improvement, lowering that SIERA to 3.68, upping his strikeout rate to 21.2%, and dropping those big flies down to 0.90 HR/9.
Gonzales has actually performed well against opposite-handed hitters as well, limiting them to a .316 wOBA, 22.3% strikeout rate, and 27.6% fly-ball rate. When we peep Albert Pujols' numbers, it makes him even tougher to play against Gonzales.
Over 68 plate appearances with the platoon advantage this season, Pujols owns only a .204 wOBA and .095 ISO, which makes him someone to pivot off of at the catcher/first base slot.
