Another cheap source of pop tonight could very well be the Toronto Blue Jays, who face struggling starter Andrew Cashner.
In 2017, as a member of the Texas Rangers, Cashner defied many advanced metrics, posting a 3.40 ERA over 166 2/3 innings, despite a 5.52 SIERA driven by a 12.2% strikeout rate and 9.1% walk rate. There's no doubt that a 74.0% strand rate worked to Cashner's favor.
In 2018, the regression monster has struck back on that ERA, as it's risen to 4.71, which is more in line with his 5.06 SIERA. Cashner has slightly increased his strikeout rate to 16.3%, but he's also increased his free passes to 9.7%.
Lefties are crushing Cashner, as evidenced by a .486 slugging percentage, 37.4% fly-ball rate, and 1.52 HR/9, which makes the super cheap Kendrys Morales a tantalizing choice. The switch-hitting slugger has performed far better as a lefty this year, showcasing a .346 wOBA and .186 ISO on the year.
If you need a cheap punt at the first base slot, peep Morales.
