With the Chicago White Sox on the verge of starting uber-prospect Michael Kopech tomorrow, another big name, Lucas Giolito toes the slab tonight. Unfortunately for Giolito, his 2018 season hasn't exactly gone according to plan.
Over 131 2/3 innings, the young righty has posted an ugly 5.58 SIERA, including a 15.4% strikeout rate and 12.2% walk rate. Among the 71 qualified major league starters, Giolito's mark ranks him dead last, and by a wide margin, too -- teammate Reynaldo Lopez is second-worst with a mark of 5.26.
With numbers that poor, you would assume there are some significant warts in that pitching profile, and left-handed batters have blasted Giolito this year for a .374 wOBA and 42.9% fly-ball rate, along with more walks (13.3%) than strikeouts (12.3%).
All of this makes Max Kepler of the Minnesota Twins a very intriguing play. The German outfielder owns a .192 ISO this year, and he will look to add to that stat in a juicy matchup tonight.
