Cleveland is one of five teams with an implied total north of 5.00 on tonight's 15-game slate, and that comes in a great matchup against right-hander Kyle Gibson and the Minnesota Twins.
Gibson has a shaky 4.24 SIERA on the year, and that puts him on pace for his sixth consecutive season with a mark above 4.10. He's also allowing career-high clips in both hard-hit rate (38.9%) and fly-ball rate (30.0%).
Jason Kipnis is not a huge threat from the dish, but he's making some excellent contact against right-handed hurlers this year, including a 38.0% hard-hit rate, 16.0% soft-hit rate and 40.4% fly-ball rate. With contact like that, his .244 batting average on balls in play (BABIP) and 8.6% home-run-fly-ball rate appear to be heavily influenced by variance. His career averages in those two stats against righties sit at .310 and 11.0%, respectively, despite the fact that he doesn't usually make this type of quality contact.
That means we can expect an improvement in his production moving forward, and a matchup with Gibson puts him in a great spot for that to happen.
