Coming off a brilliant 2017 season in which he recorded a 3.37 ERA over 155 innings pitched, posting a 26.3% strikeout rate, Zack Godley took a step back in 2018, logging a mediocre 4.74 ERA over 178 1/3 innings.
So what's in store for this year?
It could be a return to his solid form we saw a few years ago. A 4.18 SIERA last year tells us he may have been a little unlucky as Godley still posted a strong 23.4% strikeout rate and 11.5% swinging-strike rate. Godley's curveball, his main weapon, was still a strong offering in 2018, recording an 18.9% swinging strike-rate and .192 batting average against.
To limit the damage to his ERA, Godley will need to get his command back under control -- he posted a 10.2% walk rate in 2018, the worst of his major league career (three seasons). Add in the impact of Chase Field's humidor, which pushed this former offensive and home-run haven from fourth in home run factor (2017) to 19th (2018), and Godley could be in line for a solid rebound.
