It bears mentioning from the jump that Carlos Beltran may not get the start for the New York Yankees today as they lose the designated hitter in a National League park. But if he slides into the outfield, he should hold superb upside against Shelby Miller and the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Miller's stuff has fallen off a cliff in his first year in the desert with his SIERA shooting all the way up to 5.96 through his first eight starts. That has come with more walks than strikeouts and an average fastball velocity that is 1.7 miles per hour slower than his mark last year. This has been especially troublesome against left-handed batters, who have drawn 17 walks while only striking out 7 times in 90 plate appearances. That's where Beltran comes in.
We typically prefer Beltran against lefties, but he has been swinging a quality stick overall of late. Over the last three weeks, he has a 37.7% hard-hit rate while striking out only 17.4% of the time. Combining all of these factors while plopping Beltran in a park as perfect as Chase Field makes him one of the top plays of the day if he gets the start.
