Probable Starts:
Tuesday 5/31 against the Cincinnati Reds
Sunday 6/5 at the San Diego Padres
On the surface, Jon Gray, the former No. 3 overall pick, has been a disappointment in 2016. However, his 5.95 ERA is far from indicative of his actual performance on the mound. His xFIP of 3.15 depicts a truer tale of Gray's talent. His inflated .346 BABIP and unsustainably low 56.2% strand rate also suggest he has been victim of some bad luck.
In addition to some impending positive regression, Gray will benefit from two especially appealing matchups this week. Cincinnati and San Diego rank 29th and 30th, respectively, in wOBA against righties this season and both rank in the top 10 in strikeout rate against righties, too.
Keep in mind that the first matchup is taking place at Coors Field, but the two weak-hitting teams certainly make Gray a worthwhile gamble this week.
