Probable Starts:
Tuesday 5/31 at the Arizona Diamondbacks
Sunday 6/5 versus the Oakland Athletics
Lance McCullers struggled in his first start of the year (against the Boston Red Sox, cut him some slack), but has been dominant in his last two starts -- giving up just three runs on six hits over his past 11 innings.
His 3.65 xFIP is right in line with his 3.22 ERA from last season and helps alleviate any concerns over his 4.60 ERA from this season. He also has been striking out batters at an incredible rate -- posting a 30% strikeout rate through three starts. He was absolutely filthy in his most recent game, punching out 10 batters in 5 one-hit innings.
McCullers looks to carry his success into a two-start week this week. His first matchup is far from ideal, as the Diamondbacks are ranked ninth in wOBA against right-handed pitching. His second matchup is certainly good enough to ease any concerns you may have over his first one, as he draws the Oakland Athletics, who rank just 26th in wOBA against righties.
Considering how effective McCullers has been against some of the league's elite offenses (Red Sox, Batlimore Orioles and Texas Rangers), you should feel confident rolling with him in this two-start week.
