Why He Will Go Overlooked:
Jose Fernandez, Jake Arrieta, Chris Sale, Corey Kluber, Noah Syndergaard, Stephen Strasburg, and Cole Hamels are all on this slate and most of them have favorable matchups. Do you really think people are going to rush to roster Scott Kazmir and his 4.37 ERA?
Why You Should Use Him:
Kazmir's bloated season ERA is largely due to a terrible start to the year. He's been much more effective over his past eight starts, posting a 3.35 ERA, which he has complemented with a 29.8 percent strikeout rate. Kazmir's strikeout numbers recently gives him exciting potential that could certainly be realized tonight against San Diego.
The Padres, often thought of as one of the league's worst offenses, have actually been decent against left-handed pitching this season, ranking sixth in wOBA. However, this is purely an upside play, so let's examine San Diego's strikeout numbers against southpaws. Their 23.7 percent strikeout rate against lefties ranks sixth in the league, while they rank fifth in swinging strike rate and seventh in O-Swing % (swings at pitches outside of the zone).
Combine that with the fact that Kazmir has allowed just four hits in 11.2 innings against San Diego this season, and there might be some exciting and cheap potential to be had with Kazmir. Don't use him in cash formats, but toy around with some lineups built around him in tournaments tonight -- the upside is real.
