Devon Travis, a righty, is putting up some massive reverse splits this season. He's sporting a .202 wOBA against southpaws and a .378 wOBA versus righties.
Tonight, he gets a road matchup against Houston Astros right-hander Mike Fiers. Travis actually prefers hitting away from the Rogers Centre, posting a huge .473 wOBA with a 40.0% hard-hit rate on the road against righties, and Houston's Minute Maid Park checks in eighth in home run factor.
Fiers has seen his numbers take a nosedive across the board in 2016. His 4.47 SIERA and 16.4% strikeout rate are career-worst clips. Like Travis, Fiers has reverse splits, surrendering a .355 wOBA, 39.1% hard-hit rate, and 34.7% fly-ball rate to right-handed hitters.
Travis has been hitting ninth, which certainly takes a little shine off this superb matchup, but it could also make him a nice contrarian play in tournaments. At the bottom of the order, he's right in front of Jose Bautista, Josh Donaldson and Edwin Encarnacion, so if Travis can get on base, he'll likely be on the move.
