Why He Will Go Overlooked:
Nolan Arenado is in a terrific spot tonight, as is Manny Machado, who is coming off of a three-homer game last night. As a result, Jedd Gyorko likely will go overlooked, even as a terrific value play tonight.
Why You Should Use Him:
Gyorko has slowed down a bit after his hot streak in mid-July, but he has a chance to get back on track in tonight's matchup with lefty Cody Reed.
Reed has his ERA up to 7.30 after back-to-back starts with at least five runs allowed, a number he has reached in half of his starts this season. The rookie has been even worse against righties this year, posting an xFIP 0.4 runs higher against right-handed batters.
Gyorko has hit right-handed pitching better this year, but his career numbers suggest that trend will correct itself over the course of the season. He has a higher slugging percentage, wOBA, and hard-hit rate against lefties in his career.
Gyorko is a boom-or-bust option and likely isn't worth cash game consideration with Arenado and Machado on the slate. However, with St. Louis projected for five runs against Reed, he is an interesting tournament play, especially if he's hitting near the top of the order.
