2. 1988-89

Two years later, at 29 years old, Johnson proved most people wrong by improving in almost every category. He posted 16.1 win shares, .267 per 48 and a box plus-minus of 9.3. With an assist percentage of 48.6%, Johnson also accounted for the second-highest assist rate of his NBA career.

In doing so, Magic contributed 12.8 assists in 37.5 minutes while also throwing in 22.5 points and 7.9 rebounds in 77 contests. He won his second of three MVPs while leading the Lakers to another Finals appearance. They lost to the Detroit Pistons, but was voted to yet another All-Star game and All-NBA team.
